Short Bio
I am a research associate at the Centre d’études européennes of Sciences Po, Paris. I have also been a visiting lecturer at the University of Erfurt (Germany), at Sciences Po Paris, at the Centre for German and European Studies of the State University of St. Petersburg (Russia) and Assistant Professor at the American Graduate School of International Relations and Diplomacy (AGSIRD).
My work encompasses the fields of political sociology, European studies, international political economy and comparative social policy with a particular focus given to Central and Eastern Europe, Russian Federation, Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and, more recently, Sub-Saharan Africa. My research concentrates on the ways how the reforms of the systems of social protection facilitate or hinder the process of democratization and of consolidation of democratic institutions. My most recent research interests also involve migration in the Enlarged EU and mechanisms of institutional change.
My most recent publications include Post-Communist Welfare Pathways. Theorizing Social Policy Transformations in Central and Eastern Europe (together with P. Vanhuysse, 2009, Basingstoke: Palgrave Macmillan), Promoting Human Security: Ethical, Normative and Educational Frameworks in Western Europe (together with P. Burgess, et al., 2007, Paris: UNESCO) and Social Policy in Central and Eastern Europe. The Emergence of a New European Welfare Regime (2006, Berlin: LIT Verlag). I am also currently editing a major volume for the Policy Press (Bristol) entitled Migration and Welfare in the ‘New’ Europe. Social Protection and Integration Challenges (with Emma Carmel and Theo Papadopoulos, University of Bath, UK). My work has appeared in various international peer-reviewed journals, such as Social Policy & Administration, Journal of Human Security, Czech Sociological Review, Romanian Journal of Political Science and ESELY Hungarian Social Policy Review.
